How skill-building and tracking improve weight loss

Organizations that are considering offering behavior-change weight- loss solutions to decrease health-care costs need to partner with solutions that understand these factors. Understanding these factors can help programs tailor more effective weight- loss strategies and interventions. To dive deeper into the elements that contribute to successful weight loss, we recently conducted and published a comprehensive study, which focused on participants of the Wondr program, an evidence-based, digital behavior-change program, and evaluated which program activities were correlated with sustainable long-term weight loss.
The details:
- 28,833 participants enrolled in Wondr through their employer or health plan.
- Before entering the program, 60% were obese and 32% were overweight.
- The researchers examined weight loss at 12 weeks by online class attendance and outside-class activities (OCAs) including skill checks, meal logging, online community participation, goal setting, physical activity tracking and weight logging.
The findings:
All levels of class participation had successful weight loss, with no statically meaningful differences between the groups. Participation in outside-class activities (OACs) offered through Wondr was associated with higher levels of weight loss. Individuals with the highest OCAs had a 50% greater weight loss at 12 weeks compared to the lowest OCA group. Of the OCAs, weight logging had the strongest association with weight loss.
These study findings point to the value of building skills and tracking those skills with the support of the Wondr program. Teaching these skills and building easy-to-use methods of tracking creates accountability and reinforces sustainable healthy habits.
