Find yourself losing your “New Year, new me” momentum? It might be time for an energy reset. First, take a quick audit of how you feel at this moment. Did you hit snooze on your alarm this morning or are you reaching for a second cup of coffee to get through your meetings? If you said yes to either of those, you may need a reset. But the good news is, needing a reset isn’t a bad thing. It means you are in tune with how your body processes and metabolizes energy throughout the day.
Maximizing and resetting energy goes beyond personal life and wellbeing—energy affects everything we do, including our careers, relationships, and overall productivity.
To some, the concept of energy is hard to conceptualize, so let’s break it down. Think about energy in four zones: Survival, Performance, Burnout, and Recovery (1).
Survival zone: high energy, negative
When operating within a survival zone, everything feels like a fight—the focus is to survive and get through the day. One may be defensive, fearful, anxious, and worried.
Performance zone: high energy, positive
Just as it sounds, this is the optimal zone to be in. In this zone, people are optimistic, confident, and engaged. High performers operate in this zone.
Burnout zone: low energy, negative
The burnout zone often follows the survival zone. Feelings of exhaustion, frustration, and lack of motivation are expected.
Recovery zone: low energy, positive
The recovery zone is often the aftermath of being in the survival or burnout zone.
Which of these zones feel familiar? Likely, most of us have experienced all four zones at one point or another. If you’re currently stuck in a negative zone, we have a few tips to get out of an energy funk.
5 key tips to reset your energy to take on 2023:
1. Recognize the zone you’re in
Self-reflection is key. Recognizing being burnt out or stuck in survival mode can be the first step to taking control of your energy zones this year.
2. Adopt habits of highly productive people
There’s no secret that habits can make or break us. Adopt habits like learning to say “no” to manage your energy (2).
3. Set reminders to audit your energy
Prioritize energy with regular audits. Whether it is daily, weekly, or a monthly reflection, regular audits are key to success.
4. Create a plan to reach or stay in the performance zone
Being in the performance zone is optimal for you and your team. Analyze how you feel when you’re performing your best and create a plan for how to keep that.
5. Set up an accountability plan
Share your plan with someone in your circle, like your manager or team. Goals are easy to accomplish once they are spoken into existence.
Many factors impact energy, including physical and mental health. Think of these 5 tips as building blocks to support the energy journey and increase overall awareness of the impact of energy in our personal and professional lives.
